Using ChatGPT in Your Courses 

Since ChatGPT's debut, educators have been sharing suggestions on how to use this tool in their courses while addressing the concerns of academic integrity. Here are some recommendations for using ChatGPT in teaching.

 

Assignment Design

  • Get to know ChatGPT. Use it yourself to learn its capabilities and limitations. Consider how you can incorporate it into your existing assignments so that students learn its potential and drawbacks.
  • Intentionally create AI literacy assignments. Use ChatGPT as an educational tool.
    • Discuss when students may use AI tools for assignments and how they should acknowledge or cite them in their work.
    • Ask students to analyze, critique, and revise ChatGPT output using prompts based on course topics, and generated from the instructor or students.
    • Ask students to verify the accuracy of ChatGPT content by locating source material or references.
  • Create assignments which require higher-order thinking and learning, such as multimodal projects and those in which students must apply knowledge in new ways. Don’t just ask students to summarize; ChatGPT and other AI tools can do that.
  • Explain the importance of engaging in the writing process not only in academic work but professionally which may require different types of writing. Make writing assignments authentic. Incorporate different kinds of writing into assignments.
  • Keep it local and class specific. Ask students to expand on a class discussion or lecture slide, incorporating course resources and reflections of their own experiences and lives.  
  • Focus on the process of writing by building in different stages students need to complete: drafts, feedback, and revisions.
  • Consider other ways to assess students’ knowledge and understanding such as presentations, podcasts, journaling, videos, group projects, and creation of objects or products.
