Using ChatGPT in Research: Creating Prompts

Sample Prompts

The following examples demonstrate how providing prompts to an AI tool, or "prompting," can assist with identifying more keywords or getting started with a research question:

Prompt: Impacts of eating sugar on humans

chatgpt 1

As you can see from the information that ChatGPT retrieved about the prompt, it is lengthy and almost TOO much information. In these cases, you may need to refine the prompt based on this information retrieved. You can also take keywords or phrases from this prompt to search one of the library's databases.

Revised Prompt: How does sugar consumption impact weight maintenance?

By turning the prompt into a question, the topic is more narrow. The answer to this prompt is less lengthy, which is an improvement from the previous one. From here, you can utilize the keywords from the main ideas and conduct searches in library databases that correlate with your topic (cravings, body composition, hormonal changes, etc.). With the information provided and some background research, there are many research questions that can be formulated. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Why does sugar consumption causes inflammation in humans? (Biology/Anatomy)
  • Why do humans eat sugar, despite its health implications? (Psychology/Marketing/Biology)
  • What are the effects of excessive sugar intake on a student athlete? (Biology)
  • How do food companies keep sugar in their foods? (Marketing/Food Science)
  • What are the effects of high sugar intake on body composition? (Biology/Anatomy)
  • What is the relationship between high sugar intake and dental hygiene? (Dental)

This example demonstrates that AI can assist with identifying keywords that can expand your search, as well as help formulate research questions. It's important to remember that AI is NOT a replacement for library research! To retrieve scholarly research articles, you will want to use library databases (located here).
