Using ChatGPT in Research: Using ChatGPT in Research

What is ChatGPT good for?

While you are responsible for conducting the research, ChatGPT can assist with many roadblocks that you may encounter in the research process! These include:

  1. Research Topics: Not sure where to start your next research project? Ask ChatGPT some questions to get some topic ideas. From there, you can either search for background information on your own or refine it into a research question.
  2. Research Questions: If you are having trouble with turning your topic into a research question, ChatGPT can get you started with some sample questions. However, you will need to ensure that the question is refined enough and aligns with your project requirements.
  3. Background Information: Gathering background information through ChatGPT can expand your research and provide additional ideas for sources.
  4. Keywords: ChatGPT can provide synonyms and antonyms related to your topic.
  5. Brainstorming: AI tools can generate many ideas that can stimulate other creative thoughts and ideas.

What is ChatGPT not so good for?

  1. Conducting library research: You will find the most reliable and best quality sources through OneSearch and our A-Z list of library databases.
  2. Creating accurate citations: While AI tools can create citations, they are usually not correct and should ALWAYS be double-checked for accuracy.
  3. Locating lists of sources: In many cases, AI tools can make sources up that don't actually exist. As a result, it's VERY important to fact check all information retrieved from AI tools.
