Escape Rooms and Libraries: The Basics

This guide will help librarians create escape rooms at their institutes.

What is an escape room?

A group of people participate in a physical adventure game where they solve puzzles and use clues and hints to complete an objective. Most often the objective is to escape a room they are locked in together.

Tips for Getting Started:

  • Decide on a type of story:
    • Linear - players must solve all clues in a particular order.
    • Non-linear - players can solve clues in any order to escape the room.
    • Mixed - players must solve the first few clues in a particular order, which then leads to a number of clues that can be solved in any order.
    • Scavenger Hunt - players must find certain items in a room, instead of solving puzzles.
    • Red herring - not all clues in the room are relevant to the story.
  • Are there campus events that your Escape Room could be a part of? (Orientation, Rush, Little Sibs Weekend)
  • Are there departments who could collaborate on the room?
    • Does your campus have a 3-D printer to print materials?
    • Ask faculty and student organizations to test the room.
