In the early twentieth century, commencement was a week-long celebration. The baccalaureate sermon was given on Sunday, June 15, 1913, by newly-named Acting President William Harris Guyer. On Wednesday evening, June 18, there was a senior program in which each of the graduates performed in some way. The commencement ceremony itself was held the following morning, Thursday, June 19.
The 1913 commencement came at an unusual time in the history of Findlay College. Dr. C. I. Brown had recently (May 14) resigned as president, with Rev. W. H. Guyer being named acting president two days later. Both men participated in the commencement activities. At the senior program Wednesday evening, Rev. Guyer did the invocation while Dr. Brown gave the benediction. For the commencement ceremony the next morning, the roles were reversed.
