Coming off of a reading slump or not having much experience in reading for fun can be challenging. You may not know what authors or genres or even format of materials to choose from, and seeing that the Library of Congress has more than 173 million items in their library, with more and more added each day, that's not going to get any easier. Don't worry though, we've all been there. I myself just got over a 4 year reading slump, and I'm a librarian!

The following apps and websites are great places to look for reading inspiration, giving you lists of works, upcoming releases, quizzes on things you'd like, and book reviews to help you pick out the perfect reading material!

Using Social Media

Since you most likely use some kind of social media, that's another great place to start! Youtube, or Booktube as its affectionately called, has many great reviewers on any and all genres. A quick search on book recommendations or even books to get you into reading will yield DOZENS of results.

Instagram is also a great place to look. Featuring book review stories and very pretty bookcase layouts, Bookstagram is a quaint niche area of Instagram and can get you easily inspired to pick up a book!

Tiktok features the smaller community among its members called Booktok. This active and busy collection of book reviewers and even authors will give you recommendation upon recommendation. Once you like one video, the algorithm will be sure to send more your way!

Finally, the last big platform with a heavy book community is Twitter, which doesn't have a fun abbreviation unlike the last two. This one will give you more direct access to authors' social media than the last two. Be warned, though, as book Twitter is known for its drama!

The Story Graph seems to just be an app/website to record  your reading adventures. However, Story Graph features a greak breakdown algorithm to help you see what books you enjoyed and has a detailed recommendation algorithm that even lets you find new books based on your mood, page number preferences, and any tropes or plotlines you may not want to find in a book. Features an organizing shelf option and book reviews. Its become this Librarian's go-to book app!

What Should I Read Next?

WSIRN produces recommendations based purely on collective taste: when books are entered into the same favorites list, they become associated with each other. The more often particular items appear on different lists, the stronger that association becomes.
