ENVM 605 (Elswick): Introduction

Introduction

Welcome to ENVM 605, Industrial Hygiene Principles and Calculations.  This Research Guide is intended to organize some of the resources you need to complete this course.  The course reviews the computational techniques fundamental to the science of environmental health science, industrial hygiene, and toxicology.  The goal of this course is to educate students to apply basic physical chemical principles and solve environmental and occupational health problems.  After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Employ dimensional analysis in solving problems;
  • Translate the fundamental physical chemistry of gases, vapors and particles to solve complex problems;
  • Integrate physical chemical principles into environmental and occupational health and toxicology;
  • Validate exposure assessments;
  • Develop exposure assessment protocols and evaluate the exposure assessment data;
  • Solve new problems based on fundamental scientific principles;
  • Apply modeling techniques to calculate the concentrations of contaminants of concern; and
  • Apply modeling techniques to predict changes in concentration and inhalation exposures

I will provide a course intro video that describes how to access, Patty, “Industrial Hygiene”, Patty, “Toxicology” and Dinardi, “Calculation Methods for Industrial Hygiene”.  Dr. Dinardi’s text is a draft and not published as of 2015.  His first edition was published in 1995 and is now out of print.  He has been very gracious and allowed us to use his draft until such time as the 2nd edition is published.  You are encouraged to use additional resources to supplement your assignments; you will find many databases in the ESOH databases available on this web page.  Both books are available from the Shafer Library; links are provided in the Research Guide for each textbook.  There is one additional textbook  that you are required to purchase for this course.  The textbook is Industrial-Occupational Hygiene Calculations (IOHC): A Professional Reference, Third Edition, 2017, James H. Stewart, Ph.D, CIH, CSP Editor, ISBN 978-0-9671934-5-8.  The bookstore has the textbook available.

I look forward to working with you in the course.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
