Library News & Events

03/04/2025
Hey there, Oilers!
Shafer Library and our partners in OPAL and OHIOLINK are moving to a new library management system during Summer 2025 that will change how you search our content and request books from other Ohio libraries.
What does this mean?
The UF Library Catalog, OhioLINK Library Catalog, and SearchOhio Catalog will disappear. These will be replaced by a single search platform which will search not only the content in the catalogs (e.g. books and videos); but also articles, e-books, and journals. Sound familiar?
This new system will become our new OneSearch but with added functionality, including the ability to search and request books from other academic libraries in our library consortium OhioLINK; and later in the fall from public libraries in SearchOhio.
NOTE this will NOT change our collections and the resources we provide. You will still have access to the same great databases, research guides, and other information on the Shafer Library website.
Dates to know
May 23, 2025: OhioLINK borrowing/lending will be suspended until the new system goes live in June. SearchOhio borrowing/lending will be suspended until late Fall 2025.
June 18 2025: The new library system goes live & ordering and processing of new materials will resume. OhioLINK borrowing and lending resumes.
Fall 2025: SearchOhio borrowing and lending resumes. We will update when a specific date is announced.
How Do I Get Books When Lending Stops May 23-June 18
1. Plan ahead and borrow materials before lending stops.
2. Borrowing and lending of Shafer Library physical materials will continue throughout the migration.
3. Article requests can still be submitted during the migration.
4. Do I need to return any books or materials I have borrowed? No, you do not need to return materials unless they are due or you are finished using them. Aside from the borrowing freeze during May 23-June 18, you can still request and return materials as normal. Be aware that borrowing from SearchOhio will be unavailable until the Fall.
Reminders and updates
Please watch for more reminders here and on our social media reminding you of important dates as they approach and actions to take. As we finalize things on our end, we will also be updating research guides and announcing any training.
Questions?
If you have any questions, please contact Rebecca Quintus, quintus@findlay.edu or Jenni Royce, jenni.royce@findlay.edu
Thanks!
Hey there, Oilers! With the Spring Semester in full swing we here at Shafer thought it was only right to bring back our popular Flashback Fridays series! To go with the new year, what a better time to look back at interesting artifacts from UF's past! This week we take a peak at the 1990's here at our very own Shafer library! While technology has changed, Shafer library is still here to help you with your research and provide a welcoming place to study!
Student printing in front of card catalog (circa 1995)

Before electronic catalogs and databases took over in the early 2000s, if you needed to find materials you would have to look in large card catalogs, as seen in the back of this photo! Each item would have their own individual card with its publication information, and how to find it, printed on it!
Students studying in Guyer Lounge (early 1990's)
Guyer lounge, named in honor of Ohio Representative and UF Alumni Tennyson Guyer, has provided UF students with a comfortable place to study since the early 1980's. It now also features Chemistry study hours and the Honors College study lounge!

Join us in wishing a heartfelt goodbye to Brigitte Galauner, our current college Librarian for Business, Education, and Social Sciences. Brigitte has been an active part of campus since she began here in the Summer of 2022, helping with theater productions and in managing the University Archives, in addition to her instructional and research duties. She will be starting a new position at the University of Akron in the next few weeks. Be sure to stop by before her final day on Friday, July 12th to say goodbye!

Goodluck Brigitte!

The Genesis of Misery by
It's an old, familiar story: a young person hears the voice of an angel saying they have been chosen as a warrior to lead their people to victory in a holy war. But Misery Nomaki (she/they) knows they are a fraud. Raised on a remote moon colony, they don't believe in any kind of god. Their angel is a delusion, brought on by hereditary space exposure. Yet their survival banks on mastering the holy mech they are supposedly destined for and convincing the Emperor of the Faithful that they are the real deal.
Dial a for Aunties by
What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests, and then, toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family? You get 4 meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue! When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by
Genre: Literary Fiction, Romance
A modern love story about two childhood friends, Sam, raised by an actress mother in LA's Koreatown, and Sadie, from the wealthy Jewish enclave of Beverly Hills, who reunite as adults to create video games, finding an intimacy in digital worlds that eludes them in their real lives.
Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady-ah, lady of a certain age-who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco's Chinatown. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing-a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn't know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands.
Assistant to the Villain by
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer--naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie

Join the CTE, Shafer library, and the UF Writing Center in celebrating the National Day on Writing by creating your own spooky stories and sharing them on Instagram!
During this event, you will visit six locations on campus that correspond to familiar creepy settings: A haunted theater, a witches house, an asylum, a wizard’s lair, a wooded cemetery, and an abandoned well. You can work alone or in groups to write a six-part story, beginning at the theater (Ritz Auditorium in Old Main) to receive a starting prompt, and then choose your own path through your story by determining which location to go to next, and creating the next part of the story that happens at that location.
It's a 'Choose your own adventure' influenced by the settings you visit and what you find there! To fully participate, take photos, add vivid descriptions detailing your plot, and tag them with #ufwritingday22 on Instagram and you and your group may win a spooky prize!
Head on over to our Instagram to follow along with the fun!The event will take place from 11am-5pm on Thursday, October 20th & Friday, October 21st 2022

Happy Banned Books Week Oiler Nation!
Through September 18-24th Shafer library will be participating in the annual Banned Books Week.
Launched in 1982 in response to a sudden increase in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries, Banned Books Week emphasizes the value of free and open access to information. It "celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship (ALA website)."
Every year, the Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The lists are based on information from media stories and voluntary reports sent to OIF from communities across the U.S.. You can find the lists going back to 2009 on the ALA website. However, the OIF has data going back to 1990 when the began recording the data.
The Top 10 lists are only glimpse at book challenges. Surveys indicate that 82-97% of book challenges – documented requests to remove materials from schools or libraries – remain unreported and receive no media.
To learn more, head on over the Banned Books Week website or the American Library Association (ALA) website.
Throughout the week, check out the #BannedBooksWeeks on twitter for participating events and libraries and to head on over the the official Banned Books Week Twitter for more facts, digital events (lectures, workshops, readings), and news.
Also be sure to stop by Shafer library to check out our displays and participate in our 'Guess the Banned Book" drawing. We will also be posting Banned Book trivia to our Twitter and Instagram throughout the week so be sure to follow!
